Etta and Otto and Russell and James by Emma Hooper
I’m not gonna lie. I wasn’t super pleased when my book club chose this. It looked like it was about an old lady and her dog. But- no! It’s about an old lady and her WOLF! And her surprisingly interesting life and the way that lives intertwine in bittersweet and magical ways.
Not only did the characters become dear friends to the point where I was wondering how they were doing months after finishing the book, but the way Hooper plays with the gentle blur between magic and reality is delightful. The author is also a music teacher and you can feel the music throughout the writing. Oh it’s so lovely!
“We’re all scared most of the time. Life would be lifeless if we weren’t. Be scared, and then jump into that fear. Again and again. Just remember to hold on to yourself while you do it.”
